Come Laugh With Us

Image
We love fun at camp. We love to laugh and be silly. So it makes sense that our fundraisers should be some of the most fun, most entertaining events you could possibly attend. And the good news is - our fundraisers aren't all about Pond Hockey...even though we're quite fond of our Pond Hockeyers (that's definitely not a word). With all that said (brevity was never a strength) - we'd like to let everyone know about our Spring Fundraiser: A Dinner and a Laugh! This fundraiser will take place on May 7th, 2016 at 5:00pm The evening will start with a wonderful meal put together by our very own Chef Ken, who seems to outdo himself every time he puts on a meal, and will be followed by Leland Klassen. Leland Klassen is Canada's premier clean comedian! We'll be laughing our way into the evening. That's not all - there will be a fantastic silent auction and dessert to follow. Funds raised will go directly into supporting the programs that guests and campers enj...

Out with the Old and In with the New!

Image
As many of you are aware we are working hard to update some of our facilities out here at camp.  To those of you reading this you are probably thinking that Cabin Fever is what I am referring to here but actually I'm not referring to Cabin Fever at all.  We have just installed BRAND NEW kitchen counter tops!! Yes, it's out with the old and in with the new. Steph working on removing the old counter tops We were excited to have Brad from Legacy Kitchens in Calgary come out to build and install our new counters for us.  He did an excellent job! Before Brad could even start working in the kitchen we needed to remove all the drawers and cupboards as well as well anything and everything that was in the kitchen to start with.  Your probably wondering where we put the whole contents of the kitchen as construction was going on.  Well where else would we put it but in the dining hall!! All the contents of the Kitchen in the Dining Hall There are tw...

cabin fever ... there are bunks, folks!

Image
It's been a while since we've blogged about the cabins. Don't take that to mean nothing is happening, because you know what? SO MUCH is happening! The bunkbeds are in the first two cabins; they can be used. Amazing! You'll notice that the bunkbeds at the front of the cabin, on either side, have a double bed on the bottom. Back in February, Bob, one of our board members, put together a fantastic Cabin Fever! fundraiser at Lendrum church in Edmonton. It was hosted by Dr. Phil ( Gery Schubert ). We're so thankful to all the folks who came out and made generous donations! The night raised over $11,000 toward the Cabin Fever! project ... and it was a very funny, entertaining night! We're now waiting to hear from the Alberta government about a $25,000 grant, which would be fantastic and fundraising for this project continues! And they look so pretty at night!

Furnaces & Water Heater: An Update

Hello, friends. We're back from the holidays and getting back into the blogging habit! We hope you had lovely Christmases and New Year's celebrations, with family and friends! Way back in October, I posted about how we need to replace the water heater and the furnace in our lodge . You can read that post here . I just wanted to update you on how that's going. We've received $6300 in donations toward the project -- we are so grateful to each of the donors who have responded to this need! The funding means we can proceed with replacing the water heater, so that's where we're starting. We're still looking for about $14,000 (or, exactly $13,844.25), so that we can also replace the furnaces. If you're able to help us with this important replacement project, you can donate via cheque (Box 492 / Sundre, AB / T0M 1X0) or credit card (call our office at 403.638.4230) . Please designate any donations as "capital". Any funds raised beyond what ...

signs, they are a-changin'.

Image
So exciting! We got a new sign for the end of the driveway. It features our new logo, which you probably recognize, since it's been the logo on our tee-shirts and hoodies since 2008. But this fall, we bought the logo outright and you'll be seeing a lot of it on our website*, registration materials, newsletters and all the rest! The sign is also on a reflective background, which means it's impossible to miss when you're pulling in at night, as many of our weekend guest groups do this time of year. Many thanks to the kind donors who made our new sign possible! *It's about time for a website redesign, don't you think? We're looking at the spring for a new online look.

Furnace & Water Heater

UPDATED (January 5, 2011) information available here . We have a project for the remainder of this calendar year: we need to pull together $15,225 (including GST) for new furnaces plus $4919.25 (including GST) for a new water heater, to replace the furnaces and water heater in our lodge. The current units are aging and our objective is to replace them pro-actively, so we don't end up in a situation where we have to shut our doors for repairs while groups are supposed to be on site! Can you help us raise the $20,144.25 required for the new furnaces and water heater, by December 15, 2010? We've done our research and will be choose high efficiency units to replace the furnaces -- units that will not only pay for themselves in gas savings, but will be transplantable when we reach the point where we can replace our lodge*. As for the water heater, we will again be purchasing a high efficiency unit from the same line as is used in our outdoor bathrooms. Again, we anticipate that t...

settlers of cataan: the dalhousie fundraiser version.

Image
This is a very belated blog post. I'm sorry, Dalhousie! Our friends at Dalhousie Community Church , in NW Calgary, ran a super awesome Settlers of Cataan tournament recently, as a fundraiser for our Cabin Fever! project. They raised an impressive $500 and had oodles and oodles of fun! Much love and gratitude!

cabin fever!, pt. 3

I know! You're dying to know where we're at with building the first cabin! The first layer of the roof is in place and the cabin has been wrapped in Tyvec. (I'm learning all sorts of things, like what Tyvec is.) The tin for the roof is on order and willing arriving late next week and the windows are awaiting pick up at Wild's Home Hardware. We won't be doing the final layer of siding (which will match the outdoor bathrooms) till the spring: we'll do all the cabins at once. We're planning to get the tin on the roof next week, before the Christmas banquet. I'm excited about that step! The green tin is so pretty, I think. (If you've been here, it's on the lodge, Cabin 15, the outside of the Activity Centre and the roof of the Welcome Centre.) Top Left: Kevin and Richard survey the cabin, before getting started for the day. Top Right: Erin and Emily are wildly excited to spend the day with the building crew. Bottom Right: Richard peeks out over...

cabin fever!, pt. 2

Cabin building is continuing -- the guys will be out tomorrow again to work on the sheeting. I thought I'd share a little "three days of progress" video with you.

cabin fever!, pt. 1

Huzzah!* The building has commenced! Last Saturday, October 10, Kevin & Jen & kids, Andrew & Lisa & kids, Matt and Richard joined Dave in the RV sites to begin work on Cabin 1! Actually, it'll probably be Cabin 12-14 or 16, because those puppies will be the first to go. Kevin, Andrew, Richard, Matt and Dave made a good start on the cabin. Lisa, Jen and I cooked ... deliciously pre-cooked food (thanks Ken!). Andrew managed to find time to take some photos as they built, so check it out! Left: The build site, with just the skids on the ground. Right: Skids. Right: Hammer time.* Left: Land of many drills. Left: Kevin and Richard weren't cold at all (it was only -15 with the windchill, after all). Right: Fortunately, to offset the cold, a coffee break! Left: Richard and Jesse measuring. Right: The first wall is up! The second wall is up! Left: Frame of the back wall. Right: Our handsome building crew. * "Huzzah!" is actually a play on words, be...

flour fairies, QUAD buffs

Image
Recently, we've received some really sweet donations. One of our Medicine Hat friends, John (who will be speaking at the August 28-30 Family Camp ), has been sending loads and loads of whole wheat flour our way, delivered with love by Peter and Elfrieda. Thank you, all! Peter and Elfrieda's minivan was weighed down with about 1400lbs of flour in the delivery pictured below (plus many, many boxes of Triscuits, which the staff have been snacking on for the last several weeks). We also had a multiple room trailer donated to us at the beginning of May -- our male spring staff lived in it during May and June and male support staff will be living in it throughout the summer. We've been so thankful for the extra beds it has afforded us! I have a couple pictures of the moving in process to post below. My favourite is the one of Dave, Rolf, Cody, Jyle and Vince discussing their next move while gesturing all at once. I love it. The trailer -- which Courtney has taken to calling th...
