So you've had a whole week now to build your team and draft your players. what you need now is strategy! Good thing for you this blog is all on strategy, tips and tricks from the experts that have played years of Jug and Jog.  "I rarely played jug and jog in summer, but when I did it was great!" -Becca Glavind Well Becca now the next time you play you will have all these wonderful tactics to use to elevate your game! Defence I start with defence because a good defence is key to winning. You want like 25% of your team playing defence these players should be watching the box at all times remember they only win when they get all the jugs. It doesn't matter how many people are in your box the only thing that matters is that your jugs don't leave your zone.  Your defence line should be spread out along the middle of your half try to cover zones of the field don't bunch up around the box, that's puppy guarding, and not effective. Always have ...

New Camps for 2018

Image
It hasn’t been hard to enjoy the fall season at camp this year. The colour change in the leaves was gradual and stunning. Even the snow wasn’t too bad...I can’t believe I’m even saying that. It can’t last for long though. This morning brought another skiff of snow and a bit of a winter wind. I’m guessing there won’t be much left of the fall colours after this week.  Winter means more than just snow and cold temperatures. It also means the new year and Summer Camp Registration. We started posting our summer camp dates on our website this last week and before we even got them all posted, we were getting phone calls from panicked parents who were not seeing their child’s favourite camp. We had a good chuckle at that.  At each Closing Chapel this summer, we talked about our growth over the year. It is exciting and challenging as we work to find ways to fit all of our campers into camps. We’re always trying to find ways to better engage our campers and meet them where th...

LEAD on!

Image
We could not have asked for better weather on our very first LEAD Retreat. We have been so excited about this new retreat...and a little nervous. It's a different direction for us. Combining junior senior high...campers ranging from 11 to 17 years old, workshops, and a little different feeling from just a pump up retreat. We really wanted to create a space for students to learn and get inspired to grow in their personal life, to step out and start living their faith. We were excited to start getting numbers from youth groups. It turns out that this was one of the biggest Fall retreats ever. We even got word that there are youth groups wanting to come next year. It's a good thing we have 12 months to figure out where to put them. Have we mentioned that we need a new lodge?  It was PERFECT weather all weekend. The Fall colours makes the camp look stunning.  As the sun sets - the bright yellow poplar trees look like they're on fire. We experienced a glimpse in what it w...

It's Pond Hockey Time!!

Image
Perhaps it was the snow that inspired me late last week to get all of our Pond Hockey Tournament information ready. We're less than four months away from one of our favourite winter past-times. The work begins now though. The sheds and cabins have been moved, boards are being prepped. Both the hand Zamboni and Quadboni are being prepped for another season of hard work. Surfacing and leveling for Rink 2 will be done very soon. Then we wait for the cold to come. We look for a consistent temperature of about 15 degrees before our the first water trucks get called out. And then it's all about making ice day in and day out until Pond Hockey. We are looking forward to a full tournament again this year. We've already heard rumblings of new teams looking to enter. These events only get more and more exciting as we grow. Our Pond Hockey Tournament isn't just about the hockey. It's also an Open House. A great day to come see the site, meet our staff, and get a feeli...

2018 in a Nutshell

Image
Sometimes when people ask me if things have settled down at camp I want to chuckle. Not because it's a silly question - more because it can feel crazy how far in advance we are planning. Not only that, but a few short days after Impact ended we were training our Fall staff, jumped right into Summer's End Family Camp, and then started receiving Guest Groups on site. There really isn't a "settling" that happens here. Just transitions into the next season. Summer has been packed up in my office, it's true. I've rolled up the signs that read Lost and Found, Registration A-K, The Nurse and stored them for the winter. Summer planning takes a cat nap in September. By October, registration forms for 2018, speakers, and volunteers all start getting worked on. It's exciting to watch plans build and develop. Summer camp isn't the only thing we plan for right now. In fact, it's only one piece of what we do. Retreats and Fundraisers are being planned...

Don't Forget...

Image
I think sometimes September is the month of "don't forgets". Don't forget your notebook. Don't forget your lunch. Don't forget your gym clothes. Don't forget to check your class schedule. Don't forget your locker code. I was watching the staff this last weekend as we served a large Guest Group. Each week seems little more busy than the last.  There's a lot of things to remind the staff as we welcome a new group on-site. There's a lot of... Don't forget to check your schedule. Don't forget to turn off the dishwasher. Don't forget to grab the activity binder. Don't forget the keys to the challenge course. Don't forget the code to the Playing Field Shed. Don't forget to check in with the Kitchen. That's a lot of remembering. It doesn't matter if you're a student at high school, college, or university - it doesn't matter if you're a staff member at Camp Evergreen. September is full of...
