Our National Sport Pt2
So
you've had a whole week now to build your team and draft your players.
what you need now is strategy! Good thing for you this blog is all on
strategy, tips and tricks from the experts that have played years of Jug
and Jog.
The rainbow run- This is for the sprinters out there. start at one of the edges of the field, you will run in a large arch that has its climax at the jug box you will grab a jug and continue running do not stop in the box, you then run to the opposite edge making an arch or rainbow. This tactic works good when you see that the edges are weaker plus the speed will catch a caller off guard giving you a head start to home.
The skippers. You and your partner link arms and skip into the jug box. This really only works to get into the box, by throwing people off with the skip. When skipping and someone has spotted you don't be afraid to break the link and run in opposite directions.
The jail break blitz- this is a wonderful tactic that everyone should use. When a jail break is called everyone should run!! the people who are downed need to run, the people in the box should run and the offensive line should run create as much chaos as possible. In doing this you draw attention away from people with jugs who are running.
The Box Blitz- Much like the jail break blitz, the box blitz is when everyone runs from the jug box jug or not. this only works if everyone runs, the idea is to again cause that chaos on the field to give the jug runners the most time possible, to get that jug to your side.
The Warm Up- Here at camp evergreen we have a number of well known warm ups. such as the star jump the moon jump and the washing machine. All these warm ups are quit good at drawing attention away from the people in the box and the jug runners. it's harder to run when you're laughing at the silliness that someone else is doing so use that to your advantage, make them laugh.
The flying V- Don't do it! I have tried on many occasions to make this work but it has failed every time.
The Walk Backwards trick- This is a very crafty trick, start walking backwards toward their box, acknowledging the other players as you slowly walk by. Until you are in the box. Unfortunately this does not work to get jugs back
The Border Walker- This person will walk along the border of the field until they are behind the box they then walk in the box grab a jug and quietly walk back to their side along the border again. Very tricky but has worked many times.
Water Melon!!- This is a last chance we are about to lose strategy. When that last jug of yours gets across the line the other team has not won until all the jugs are in their box, so as long as that jug is on the field of play you can still win. Water Melon is a code word for everyone one run and grab a jug. Only use this tactic in the most hopeless of situations.
The Distraction- Last but defiantly not the least is the strategy that is near and dear to my heart, the distraction. As one of only a few masters of this strategy I can safely say that it's no cake walk although cake would make it better! This tactic involves a lot of running and yelling so make sure you warm up both your legs and your lungs before you play. You're goal as the distraction is to simply distract the other team get them to follow you as much as possible run around be crazy draw their attention away from the jug runners. Even when you're tagged(which happens a lot) you can always talk with the other players ask them questions and keep their attention from the game at hand.
"I rarely played jug and jog in summer, but when I did it was great!" -Becca Glavind
Well Becca now the next time you play you will have all these wonderful tactics to use to elevate your game!Defence
I start with defence because a good defence is key to winning. You want like 25% of your team playing defence these players should be watching the box at all times remember they only win when they get all the jugs. It doesn't matter how many people are in your box the only thing that matters is that your jugs don't leave your zone. Your defence line should be spread out along the middle of your half try to cover zones of the field don't bunch up around the box, that's puppy guarding, and not effective. Always have one or two loud callers that can alert you to when a jug runner has left the box. When you hear that alarm go everyone should be watching to see if the jug is near their zone and try and help. Another key part of defence is actually played out by your offence when they rescue fellow team mates, its key to keep your team at full strength as mush as possible.Offence
Your offence makes up about 75% of your team. These are your sprinters and joggers. They are the ones that will risk life and limb to get those jugs to your side. They need to be able to think on their feet and strategize on the run to get past that defence. When on offence you should try and work in groups of two or three. two people working as wing men and one that stays behind and rescues the two if they need help. this also allows for you to rotate and rest a bit. Your offence should also be saving people as much as possible. you can never save to many lives I always say. Positionally speaking these players will stand along the half line ready to make a run."It's the type of game that puts hair on your arm pits"-Arlen Peters
This is a very true statement, which makes it hard for the German staff that come out every year. Not only does it increase the hairs on your body but it also increases your tactical knowledge being able to out think and out manoeuvre the other team leads to increased mental abilities. Now if you're new to the sport don't worry here are some of our most popular tactics.Tactics
There are many different plays out there to fill your play book with, these are just some of our favourites and best, that we have used over the years. The rainbow run- This is for the sprinters out there. start at one of the edges of the field, you will run in a large arch that has its climax at the jug box you will grab a jug and continue running do not stop in the box, you then run to the opposite edge making an arch or rainbow.
