Something that is getting to be a tradition for us at Camp Evergreen is our annual trip to Vancouver Island that we do with German Volunteers. Something different for this year...we added a Kiwi! No, not the fruit...Emily, our staff from New Zealand. Two Totems are best! This trip is a way that we can say thank you for volunteering for the year. It was a bit of a whirlwind trip as we left the day before Good Friday and returned late, late the day after Easter Monday. It is always very fun to show these young Internationals the beauty of Western Canada. It's also a good reminder to me not to become blind to what makes our piece of Creation so unique and special. From the subtle, yet significant, differences in the mountain ranges to the stark differences in landscape on the Island. Giant trees and trees that grow out of dead stumps to everything green that grows on, well, everything in coastal BC. After a full day of driving, our first stop is Vancouver. Granville Isla...

Slow Down and Smell the Rose

Image
The winter season is coming to a close here at camp. In just a few short days, we will be welcoming a number of amazing individuals to join our team. There is a mixture of emotions amongst the staff. We are excited to begin this new season and ready for change, but change is scary and transition can be hard. So I want to take some time to reflect on this past winter season.   The Winter Staff One thing Taylor Jenkins has said to me from day one was "Slow Down and Smell the Roses." In spring, summer, and fall, we have guest group after guest group. We are running from the kitchen to activities, from activities to the kitchen, from the kitchen to cleaning. It is busy, busy, busy! Often times, you feel like there is no time to slow down and really take it all in. But Winter is a very different story. Weekends are still busy, but for the most part guest groups are smaller in number. We are ever so thankful for all the volunteers who helped us out on the busier weeken...

There and Back Again - A German Volunteer's Tale

Jogee reporting here...It's Sunday and it's barely been 48 hours since Taylor, Christoph, Sebastian, Felix, Josh, Tamara, and I returned from a very quick, but exciting, trip out to Vancouver Island.  We should start by answering the question "why". Well...because we can. Just kidding! Seriously though... Why ARE you driving some of your staff out to the coast? Well - the answer is simple. It's a giant thank you to our annual German Volunteer staff. Many of them come really wanting to see (and jump into) the Pacific Ocean so we made it happen. It was a big adventure and we did a ton of sight-seeing and travelling around the lower Main Land and Vancouver Island. Here's how the trip went and some pictures that captured our favourite moments: Monday  - We started out at 6am to beat Holiday traffic and drove to Stillwood Camp and Conference Centre - that's off of Cultus Lake near Chilliwack, BC.  It was great! Traffic was basically non-existent an...

5 Germans & One Big Canadian Christmas

Image
It's Christmas Time!     Normally in every German house, it starts with 1 candle on the advent wreath and then you get this feeling: It’s Christmas time! But this year it was different: Although Felix tried his best with playing Michael Bublés Christmas Songs back and forth since October, the Christmas feeling didn’t really want to come up until two weeks before Christmas. But then we were amazed by the effort that the Canadians made to give us a perfect Christmas experience.    It started with a Staff-Christmas-Party in the Heritage Room. Bob and Bev put lots of work in it and created a wonderful atmosphere. Something that surprised us was the food. Although Germans have a big diversity of food at Christmas, we didn’t expect Chinese food at a Canadian Christmas Party. (Yummy, yummy, it was so good! ) For the actual Christmas days, we split up in little groups and we were invited to different people. Despite we spent Christmas at different place...

Hey! We have been busy here at Camp Evergreen, building new cabins, serving our guest groups, training horses and preparing everything for next summer! This winter we have eleven seasonal staff staying on and we want you to meet them! Left to Right: John, Josh, Jesse,Christoph, Sebastian,Felix,Dylan,Juli,Tamara, Alana,Taylor.   Now a little about us!  ... I asked everyone to write a sentence or two about themselves. Here's what they said! Alana: Loves to try crazy things on horseback, she watches romantic movies like they are horror movies, loves to talk during meals and forgets to eat. Christoph: Likes the outdoors and everything connected with it like climbing, hajking(hiking), tracking, horseback riding and many more... Dylan: Master of awesome facial hair, could be a stunt double for Willie Robertson, loves old cars, well used guitars, and flannel. Dylan wishes he had a truck like John's. Dylan didn't choose the redneck life - it chose hi...
