Talking Tuesday - Ken Underwood

Image
Hey there, This Talking Tuesday post will look different than we've seen these past few weeks. We have gotten to know some board members and some of our permanent staff and this week is no different in that respect - we will get to know our Food Services Manager, Ken Underwood, who has worked in his position for almost 18 years.  This week will look different though, as this is Ken's last Spring and Summer at Evergreen. He and his family have made the decision to move on as they feel God's calling taking them elsewhere. It has been such a privilege, for those of us at Camp, to watch what the Lord is doing in Ken's life these past months as He has begun equipping Ken in different areas for future ministry.   I have had the opportunity to work with Ken in different settings throughout my 4 years at Camp - as a regular seasonal staff, almost 2 years as his assistant, and most recently, working alongside Ken, administratively, throughout Evergreen-to-go a...

Talking Tuesday - Courtney Armstrong

Hey there, Last week I wrote about the rain that has started to fall, and let me tell you, it sure has continued! The mud has continued to accumulate and we are looking forward to sunny days to dry it up - but for now we thank the Lord for the rain that our pastures definitely need!  Today, we're continuing our Talking Tuesday Series when we take some time to introduce you to the people that keep Camp running all year long. So, grab your hot beverage of choice, take a seat, and get to know our Executive Director, Courtney Armstrong: How long have you worked at/been connected camp?   I have never been a camper at Evergreen but I have been connected with Evergreen since 1999. I worked five summers as a spring/summer staff (wrangler, out-trips director, Head Cabin Leader, Assistant Program Director) then I started working in January 2005 as a permanent staff member. This summer will be my 21st summer...

Hey there, The rain has finally decided to fall out here at Camp and when you mix that with the current construction, we have A LOT of mud. I'm pretty sure that if I went out to certain spots, the mud would go halfway up to my knees... BUT Praise the Lord: The rain means our fields will be turning green and be ready for our horses and the construction means our septic system is being updated!  Today, we're continuing our Talking Tuesday Series when we take some time to introduce you to the people that keep Camp running all year long. So, grab your hot beverage of choice, take a seat, and get to know Board Member, Kim Guenter: How long have you worked at/been connected camp?   My first summer was 2006... so 15 years this summer. Mostly I’ve worked in the barn, or ran the old trails away out trip, and WTP program, or have supported the girls with the horse program throughout the years. But I have also been the camp nurse a few times and even a cabin leader onc...

Hey there, If you follow us on Social Media, I'm sure you've seen that we are 'getting our poop in a group'! We've got heavy machinery all over site as they dig holes and get ready to put in our new septic system. It might not be glamorous, but it sure is exciting as this is the gateway project for all other developments that may come to Camp in the future. A great big THANK YOU to all the Reaching Higher donors that have helped get us to this place!  Today, we're continuing our Talking Tuesday Series when we take some time to introduce you to the people that keep Camp running all year long. So, grab your hot beverage of choice, take a seat, and get to know Board Member and Board Secretary, Rebekah Williams: How long have you worked at/been connected camp?    My whole life!  I attended Camp Evergreen as a camper all throughout elementary school and junior high school.  My family also came for church picnics and family camp.  I volunteered in...

Hey there, Some may say I'm in denial, but I really do believe we are SO CLOSE to having no snow left on site! We saw some snow come down yesterday but it was gone as quickly as it came; all we have left is some smaller piles that are fighting hard to keep their place. I've busted out my capris and sandals and have decided it's just time to ditch all the layers! Speaking of getting ready for warmer weather, have you heard about our Fun in the Sun Run happening in Calgary on Saturday, May 1st!? This is a FREE event for families to work together in an 'Amazing Race' type day, enjoying some classic camp fun and  getting out of the house! Registration will be up on the website soon! Today, we're continuing our Talking Tuesday Series when we take some time to introduce you to the people that keep Camp running all year long. So, grab your hot beverage of choice, take a seat, and get to know our Staff Director, Lane Thielmann: How long have you worked at/been connect...

Talking Tuesdays - Eric Schubert

Hey there! The snow has fallen again out on the property and the gravel roads that were so close to being dry are now muddy puddles with melting snow once again!  I know early-Spring time isn't a favourite of many people, but it is definitely my favourite season. There is just something so sweet about finally being able to go outside in just a sweater after long months of bundling up to stay warm. And please, don't get me started on how AMAZING the outside world smells right now! I mean, have you stepped out your front door and taken a huge deep breath lately!? Talk about a breath of fresh air! Seriously, it's my favourite. Over the next handful of weeks, I want to take some time to introduce you to the people that keep Camp running all year long - a series called "Talking Tuesdays!". So, grab your hot beverage of choice, take a seat, and get to know our Chair of our Board of Directors, Eric Schubert. How long have you worked at/been connected camp? My entire lif...

One year of Covid-19

Hey friends! I am so excited to start this new adventure of writing for the Green Spot Blog! I say 'adventure' because that is exactly what it's going be - it might even get messy and be all over the place, so thank you in advance for trudging along with me! Today marks one year since WHO declared a global pandemic. Over the past year, camp has had to change in so many ways, and just like the rest of the world, pivoting has become our theme! With every changing regulation, we have had to re-evaluate our plans and make changes - some more drastic than others. We've had long stretches of not being able to have guests on site and we've had to grieve the loss of Summer camps. This has been a wild year, folks, but that's not really what this is about - this post is a deep dive, nose first look at what the Almighty God has done at Camp Evergreen over the past year. This pandemic has not surprised Him and it has definitely not stopped His work. So, sit with me a moment...
