Talking Tuesday - Lane Thielmann

Hey there,

Some may say I'm in denial, but I really do believe we are SO CLOSE to having no snow left on site! We saw some snow come down yesterday but it was gone as quickly as it came; all we have left is some smaller piles that are fighting hard to keep their place. I've busted out my capris and sandals and have decided it's just time to ditch all the layers!

Speaking of getting ready for warmer weather, have you heard about our Fun in the Sun Run happening in Calgary on Saturday, May 1st!? This is a FREE event for families to work together in an 'Amazing Race' type day, enjoying some classic camp fun and  getting out of the house! Registration will be up on the website soon!

Today, we're continuing our Talking Tuesday Series when we take some time to introduce you to the people that keep Camp running all year long. So, grab your hot beverage of choice, take a seat, and get to know our Staff Director, Lane Thielmann:

How long have you worked at/been connected camp?

Mikaela and I moved to Camp Evergreen in October 2015, so almost 5.5 years ago. But my connection with Camp Evergreen before that was that my parents met at Evergreen when they were both full time staff in the late 80s.

How long have you been in your current position?

I have been the staff director at Camp Evergreen for 4 years now, since January 2017.

What did you do before coming to Camp?

I spent the four years prior to coming to Camp Evergreen at Bethany College in Hepburn Saskatchewan studying for a degree in Biblical Studies. During the summers I was a coach with Athletes in Action running Christian soccer camps.

What is your favorite thing about Camp ministry?

My favorite thing about Camp Ministry is being able to work with young people who are looking to make a difference for Christ and being able to see them grow and mature as they serve God at Camp.

Why is Camp Ministry important to you?

Camp Ministry is important to me because I believe God has called his people to reach out to others and to spread the good news of Jesus to the world. I think Camp has a special place in this mission because it is one of few places where non believers will actively choose to come knowing they will hear about Christ and be involved in a Christian atmosphere.

How have you seen the Lord work at Camp throughout Covid-19?

The Lord has been at work at Camp through Covid-19 like he always is. He repeatedly provides for us financially and with the personnel we need to make camp run. Specifically this year it was amazing to see how much money our fall fundraiser brought in despite many people going through financial strain. In addition God worked to make our alternate summer very fruitful and we were able to have more new people come through our site than we ever would have with our traditional summer camps. This was a great opportunity for us to share and model Jesus to those who do not know him yet!

What is one thing you would want to tell any future camp staff?

Camp is a place that will make an impact in your life and allow you to make an impact on others. It is a place where you will make many great friends and learn important life skills as you live, work and play in community as you give of your self to serve the Lord. Just be aware that if you decide to come for a summer, you'll probably have a hard time not coming back.

Thanks Lane!
