Was the Pond Hockey a Success?
YES! The 5th Annual Pond
Hockey was a resounding success! Ten teams from across Alberta
joined us for the day. Together we raised just over $20,500! This
money will go toward our Cabin Fever project, (a friendly reminder
that our next Cabin Fever Work Day is Saturday, January 25th!)
The Lord truly blessed us with perfect weather. Our staff worked
extremely hard getting the site prepared, putting in long hours
“zamboni-ing” the ice! Ken and the kitchen staff put on a
wonderful spread and a special thanks to Taylor Jenkins, our
Assistant Program Director, for organizing the event.
The Procrastinators - captained by Matt
Enns - captured the coveted “Golden Skate” award. It was a close
battle as the Procrastinators came from behind to beat the District 5
Slugs, (led by our favourite man of many faces – Gery Schubert)
late in the game. Congratulations Procrastinators and we hope to see
you back next year to defend your title.
The team that brought in the most
pledges was Team Lendrum led by captain Randal Thiessen. This is the
second year in a row Team Lendrum has won the top sponsored award and
gets their names engraved forever on the new “Golden Stick”
award. Lendrum brought in $3,625 and Keith Thiessen (Team Linden)
gets an honorable mention for raising the most funds as an
individual.
New for this year was a kids skill
competition and kids program in the morning. Ethan, Theo and Zach
were the big winners this year.
Cody Hoffman (Team Linden), one of our
illustrious board members won the “Best Reason To Have A Penalty
Box Next Year” award. Karen Henry (Team Sole) also won the same award.
Here's Cody, in red, “encouraging” Eric Schubert (District 5
Slugs).
Another highlight was Tom Mulhern,
pastor at Dalhousie Community Church, and his play by play action.
Tom didn't let his lack of hockey knowledge (sorry to let the cat out
of the bag) dampen his enthusiasm. Here he is interviewing Matt Enns
(Procrastinators). Asking Matt what his favourite cheese is really
doesn't have a lot to do with hockey. Thanks Tom!
Plans are already under way for next
year. There is a rumour of an organ! Remember the days when arenas
had organs? We are also talking about having a couple of games
“under the lights” Friday night. Thanks to all the volunteers and
spectators who came out and made the day a success. We look forward
to seeing you all next year!
