January 25th Work Day
We
had a great work day on Saturday, January 25th. The sun was
shining, the weather was warm and the food was fantastic. Here's Ken braving the January temperature working his skills on the BBQ! (tinkling the ivories comes to mind) The flame is all good though, just adds flavour!
As you can
see by the group picture we had a good crowd out helping us. Thanks
to all the volunteers and our staff for their hard work.
We
had three projects we were working on. The first project was to
finish insulating the cabins. Christoph, Sebastian, John and Owen (far left in the group picture) were the
main insulation crew. It seems like wearing flannel was the
prerequisite.
Sebastian
and John were on the ground making sure the insulation was flowing. Notice the high tech instrument John is using to break up the
insulation. To most eyes it would look like a piece of scrap lumber,
but to the trained eye its a delicate piece of scrap lumber.
We
are happy to report that the cabins are now completely insulated. Here's Christoph up in the attic and the attic full of snow, I mean
insulation.
The
second project was painting the ceilings. With the attic full of
insulation that means we can now bring heat into the cabins. We were able to get primer on 3 ½
cabins. Here is our painting crew, (from my left to your right) Rhys, Nicole, Justin and Graham. Contrary to what
you see on Rhys' pants in the second picture, most of the paint did make it to the ceiling.
The
final project was a combo of finishing off the remaining bunks and
staining. Here's Kevin giving detailed instructions to Jesse and
Juli. Obviously Kevin is going on and on about the angle of the
board. Its a good angle!
It
was good for me (Ranger) to connect with an old friend Bill from back
in my Stillwood days. Thanks for helping with the bunks Fred, Shawn and Jenn!
What's
next? We will work hard at finishing painting the ceilings in the
coming days. Once that is done we can move the pine inside to cure
for 3-4 weeks.
We
are still pushing hard to have the cabins ready by the end of April.
We are now calling for volunteers who not only know what a brad
nailer and chop saw are, but are not afraid to use them! We need to
put the pine tongue and groove up in the cabins starting at the end of
February and beginning of March. Maybe your Small Group is made up
of skilled people? Maybe all your boy or girl club leaders love brad
nailing? You know what they say, measure twice, cut once!
We
are also looking for help in staining and painting. If you have some
time to give let us know and we'll put you to work. Contact camp
directly if you think this is something you can handle.
Thanks
again to the staff and volunteers.
