Reindeer?!?!
As promised, here is an update on the adventures of our German Friends.
"Rudolph the red nosed reindeer..." Ok maybe not a red nosed reindeer, but actually REINDEER! Jessica and Hannah have been helping to train reindeer with our friend Monica. Unfortunately not red nosed reindeer like Rudolph, but I am not joking when I say real reindeer. Monica owns a reindeer farm and she trains reindeer to take to various events in the area, she has even brought them out to Camp before. As we all know, reindeer are not native to Alberta so you might be finding yourself asking, "How did reindeer get to Alberta? Can they really fly?" No, I'm sorry to tell you that reindeer cannot actually fly but they are actually real!! Many people think that reindeer are the same as caribou but that is not entirely true, they are however in the same family as caribou. Monica has about 20 reindeer!
Jessica and Hannah have gone to visit and help train these reindeer for events quite a few times over the last month or so. When they go and help train reindeer these are some of the things that they help out with. First, its really important to put safety first, so Hannah and Jess are required when working with the reindeer to wear safety glasses or sunglasses like Hannah prefers to wear! The reason for this is that Reindeer have very large antlers and you wouldn't want to get poked in the eye with one of them!
Its really important to teach the reindeer that they do not need to be scared of people or shy of kids, so one of the primary jobs that Jessica and Hannah get to help with is getting the reindeer used to being around people. To do this they simply lead the reindeer around on a lead rope allowing the reindeer to get comfortable being close to people or used to having people near them. They have also gotten to help train the reindeer to get used to going into the trailer that they get transported in. Its important that the reindeer are used to the trailer so that Monica can take them to all the events that she goes too.

When asked how they liked working with the Reindeer both Jess and Hannah said that it was really cool. Jess said, "It's one of the best things I've done here!"
