Staff Bios: Meet Our German Friends!
This year at camp, we have had three staff members join our team all the way from Germany! They are all spending just under a year volunteering with us in all areas of camp work. Christoph and Jessica (but most call her Fritzi!) arrived just as the summer began, while Hannah came in the beginning of September. We have loved having them here, and we asked them a few questions so that everyone could get to know them better:
Name, age, hometown:
Christoph, 21, Deisenhausen
Hannah, 19, Gebersheim
Fritzi, 18, Steinheim
Hobbies/Loves:
Christoph: Every kind of sport, and survival skills (He's our resident campfire expert!)
Hannah: Being outdoors, campfires, hiking, camping, and cherry blasters candy
Fritzi: Ballet, drama, being with friends, and playing guitar
Of all the places you could have gone to volunteer, why did you choose Camp Evergreen?
Christoph felt God's call was to Canada, and he wanted to work at camp, and to be in nature.
Hannah says all her other plans fell through so it must have been God's will!
Fritzi wanted to see Canada, and to volunteer and serve God by working with children.
What do you do at camp?
Christoph was one of three leaders of the boys' Roughin' It summer camp. This fall, he's done almost everything at camp, and really enjoys leading at the climbing wall.
Hannah is happy that her work is really just her hobby (being outdoors) and really likes to lead at the challenge course.
Fritzi was a cabin leader during the summer, and hosts groups during the fall. Her favourite activity this summer was handcrafts, and now it is archery.
Favourite Bible verse:
Christoph: 1 Corinthians 13
Hannah: Psalm 30:11-12
Fritzi: Proverbs 3:5-6
If people were to describe you in one or two words, what would they be?
Christoph: (He said he didn't know, so we decided on strong and friendly.)
Hannah: Shy and silent. Ha! Actually, chatty and outgoing. (At this point I said that some people might call her a chatterbox, and all three thought that was a hilarious English nickname!)
Fritzi: "I'm indescribable, you really have to get to know me! I'm Simply Fritzi."
When you were five years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Christoph: A superhero
Hannah: A ballerina
Fritzi: An actress
If you were a plant, what would you be?
Christoph: Old Man's Beard (It's the best tool for fire-building!)
Hannah: A dandelion, because their seeds travel great distances just like she has.
Fritzi: A banana tree, because she's always GOING BANANAS!
What would be in your ultimate care package?
Christoph: German pudding powder for making cheesecake (Ask him about the time he really wanted to make German cheesecake, but with Canadian ingredients!)
Hannah: German cherry blasters and her mom (I hope we can find a box big enough!)
Fritzi: Buckets and buckets of ranch dressing, and Nutella
And now, some questions for everyone:
What are some strange things you've noticed about Canada?
All of the wild actions and jumping around we do at Yodel and Hum (but I think this might be a strange thing we do at Camp Evergreen!), the way the bathrooms work, Canadian breakfasts, too much ranch dressing, the cold weather in October, and people who spend their Saturdays driving around to garage sales.
What do you really miss about Germany?
Friends and family, and German breakfast. Hannah misses being able to express herself (we're all learning that English is a very difficult language!) and Christoph misses being able to go to a fitness centre all the time. Here, he lifts fallen trees instead of working out!
What are some cool things you've seen and done in Canada?
Banff, the Calgary Stampede, whitewater rafting, hiking in the mountains, and riding a yellow school bus.
What were you surprised to see in Canada?
Not everyone looks like a lumberjack (Hannah and Fritzi still have friends who think they'll come home married to lumberjacks!) and that there are so many cars everywhere. They had hoped to see Mounties on horseback, and they can't believe how much bacon some people can eat, and that some of us like to walk around in shorts on snowy days! (Well, that's just Steph, and we all think that's weird.)
What would you still like to see in Canada?
More Canadian landscapes, Niagara Falls, Vancouver Island, Jasper, and more wildlife. (Ask Hannah and Fritzi about the mooing "bear" they saw!)
Now you know all about our German staff, and we hope you'll get to meet them! They're due to leave next spring, but we're sure we can convince them to stay at least another summer. It's been a blast having them around!
