Hello all readers of the camp dash evergreen blog. It is april first, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, the tank is clean (and 'Finding Nemo' is being quoted) spring is right around the corner and it is time for this blog to be updated.

Given the lack of foolish people that read this blog there will be no attempts to fool any one you.

My name is Luke. I just started here at camp. Just started for this year, that is. I've been coming here on and off for a few years now.

Many changes have happened (as you are probably well aware) and the job that I was originally hired for technically no longer exists. Thus I cannot give you an acurate job title and I'm not allowed to just make one up.
So far my job duties have been to update this blog and learn myself about many of the new things that I havn't done before.

Since I dont know much else about my job- I figure ill tell you what i do know and if there's one thing I know it's about my self...

Here is a recent (as in i took it an hour ago) picture of me.
I think its more fun that it (the picture) is sideways.You might want to consider tilting your computer screen or head (whichever is easier for you)

I'm 24 (almost 25)
I have ridiculously bad grammar/spelling (and apologize for such)
I play the drums and other percussion instruments
I have a sarcastic sense of humour (which gets me in to trouble sometimes)
I have been a Christian for a number of years. (I can't tell you an exact date or time)
attended Bethany College for two years and have completed a Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Ministries and Biblical Studies
I have travelled on missions trips to 5 out of the 7 continents and have a summer backpacking trip planned for the last habitable one this coming summer.

On that note its going to be a very strange summer. I am here for the next three months and a few days before sumer starts I leave. At this point I don't know who will be giving leadership to running things around here then. If you desire to pray you can pray that God provides someone. You can also continue to pray for the staff that God will bring for the spring and summer.

It is fast approaching and to say that I am nervous would be an understatement. I have to trust that God knows what He is doing and with all the people leaving and new people coming it appears as though (as the book of Isaiah says) He 'is doing a brand new thing'

Hey Everyone, Stevyn here!

Once again, things around camp are changing. One of the things we are most excited for is our new challenge course. It's in the process of being built as I am writing, and will be ready by the summer for all of you to use!!

As the title indicates, spring is indeed upon us which means many things - warmer weather, busier schedules, and the sighting of animals like deer, squirrels and birds.

Another exciting part of spring at camp evergreen is the birth of foals. Although we don't
have any yet, we are looking forward to the arrival of three babies in the near future!

Daisey, Julia's mare, is also going to have a foal soon.

Ruby, our third mare expected to foal out soon.

We're also getting excited as we look forward to, and have begun to plan for the summer. Things are already starting to buzz around here with excitement and anticipation of the week you will be here!! Spring staff will be arriving near the end of April to help us really jump full on into the rush of summer.

Recently, I've been thinking a lot about God and how much He loves me, and why... I mean, I'm nothing special... Just one of about six billion people on the planet... What makes me so different, and special, and loved? Well, for one thing, I'm His kid! I accepted Christ into my life at the age of about three. I didn't really understand all of what that major decision in my life meant, but over the years, I've learned more and more about what a relationship with God really is, and the more I learn, the more it TOTALLY BLOWS ME AWAY!! I mean, if I had been the ONE AND ONLY person on the earth, Jesus STILL would have come, and would have lived His life on earth, and died to save ONLY ME! How totally awesome is that?! God is SO good!

Another thing God's been reminding me and teaching me about is loving everyone... Unconditionally! Sounds simple, and most of the time, it's not too difficult to do... I mean, there's not too many people in my life that irritate me, and let's face it, I know I'm not always the easiest person to get along with either... It's amazing to think that NO MATTER WHAT people say about me, or think about me, or do to me, I'm loved and I'm beautiful to God.

Hey, did you know we are ALL made in God's image? It's true! The Bible says so! In Genesis 1:27 it says "So God created man in His own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female He created them." So here's some food for thought... Next time you make fun of your brother or sister, or a friend at school, or maybe even the school bully, remember... Each face you look at gives you just a little peak at what God is like.

Hey there, its Julia. Apparently I get to be the first one to update since Jenni's intros.

So far this year, we have had two of our retreats. We had the Rise'n' Shine Jr High retreat, and the Ladies retreat. This past week has been a week of band camps. Two groups from Ecole Airdie have been out here to visit with us. As I sat around, I was remembering what it was like for me as a Jr High band student. When you are in jr high, you think that even though your are just learning how to play, you are still the best player in the band, and to you, your band sounds amazing. When you get down to it though, the band is still just a beginner band and your are not going to sound like the symphony orchestra by the time your concert rolls around.

Something interesting about a band is how all the instruments in a section have to work together to create good harmony, and also how the sections have to work together to have all the parts and balanced sound. Being a trumpet player makes a person really aware of balance. If one or two trumpets, in a 10 to 15 person section, is playing too loud then the section may begin to over power the band. This makes the band sound off balance, and therfore they do not sound very good. The band also does not sound very good if a couple of the parts are missing. If there were no low brass, who would carry the base line?

Thinking about this has just got me to thinking about spiritual gifts. I heard a sermon on 1 Corinthinans 12 not too long ago, which links to the idea of a balanced band. The pastor was talking about how the church would look if everyone stepped up, and used their gifts the way God intended. A couple of his examples were: if the prayer warriors stepped up, then the people would turn to them with prayer requests, and if those who were gifted to speak would step up, then we would be hearing from many different people about what God has placed on their hearts. It would be really amazing if everyone stepped up. Just like in the band, the upper wood winds can't tell the low brass that they don't need them, they can perform without them and still sound good, the church cannot decide that a certain gift is not necessary. The church body cannot function properly without each part, nor can a band sound well balanced if they are missing a section.

so i want to introduce you to some people because they'll be updating the green spot once in a while.

julia...

is 5' 4" and plays the trumpet. she owns a horse named daisy (and can't wait for daisy's baby horse to be born around march 27th). julia likes mountains, speaks spanish, and has never worn the big yellow apron when doing dishes.

stevyn...

is 6' 6'' and has to duck to avoid hitting the ceiling of some parking garages. he's really good at playing the guitar. stevyn has ridden a bike backwards, and can walk on his hands. he has not, however, ridden a horse backwards.

kristy...

is 5' 5"ish... and a toothpick! she's also cold all the time, so we call her the Icestickle. she is equal part rock climber and cowgirl. kristy hates mushrooms, and would really like ken to make pizza today. she has one brother and a cat named tigger.

sugar...

is about 5' 9". he has worked at camp evergreen since 1997. his real name is jason, he likes video games, and his car recently took a permanent vacation to the dump. sugar is also a phenomenal photographer, and has taken lots of the pictures you see on the blog.

...dorothy and all her friends from the land of OZ showed up to banquet on friday?

...the amazing race came to camp evergreen and SARDINES was on the menu?

...peanut butter and jam made an appearance (we had to explain to PB that we're a nut free camp)?

... you thought your cabin leaders were totally, absolutely, COMPLETELY crazy? (you were right)

can't wait to see you all again! (maybe at rise'n shine - the jr. high retreat in january! check out the website for details). but until then... lovin' snowball fights and hot chocolate.

kristy and julia and i spent yesterday helping out at a Habitat for Humanity house - painting closets, ceilings, the furnace room, and each other. the furnace room was the most brilliant pastel purple i have ever seen! thought you might like some of our pictures.

we've been doing a lot of classroom stuff with the Pillar team, so it was really good to go and get our hands dirty because "faith by itself, if it is not accompanies by action, is dead" (james 2:17).
we can't really say that we love Jesus if we're not out there loving people. so today - act out your love for Jesus by loving somebody around you. maybe that means doing the dishes for your mom and dad. or encouraging a friend who's down. or giving some of your money to an organization like the Mustard Seed that's trying to help people who are cold and hungry in your area. or volunteering to help out in a sunday school class. but somehow, someway - get involved somewhere. and i think you'll have more fun than you thought was possible.

i have a hard time staying positive about winter... icy roads, cold feet, dark evenings. i just look forward to summer (and seeing you all!) so much. but hey... since winter is here to stay for at least a few months, why don't you fill me in on some of your winter favorites.

i want to tell you about something that's been stewing here for a few years. we call it PILLAR, and we kicked it off this september. we're studying God's Word. we're taking an "urban plunge" in calgary in november. we're taking on some outdoor challenges. we're trying to figure out what it looks like to know Christ and enjoy Him. what does it mean to pursue Christ? and to bring glory to Him?

that's us on our first mountain day - on the summit of mount yamnuska. staff, pillar-ites, and rolf - our trusty austrian guide.

who? anyone age 18-25 who is passionate about pursuing Jesus Christ
what? PILLAR
when? september-december and/or january-april
where? camp evergreen and beyond
why? because i want to live with passion and purpose. because i'm hungry to be molded into the person God created me to be.

marshmallow roasts. serving camp evergreen's guests. horseback riding. a fondue party. devos together. team building. family nights at j-bee's house. journalling. mountain days in God's beautiful creation.

for those of you who haven't heard, courtney is off dump-tackling people on a rugby field, so i'm here... holding the fort. doing the dishes. updating the blog. etc.

here's a bit of what's going on this week. we've got ignite II happenin' right now and it's totally awesome. but that also means that there's only 1 week of camp left. THAT'S CRAZY!! totally crazy. but we've had some truly awesome things going on like we had Sheree Plett and Eisenhauer who were awesome and rocked our socks off for coffee house. check them out and buy their music - it was totally sweet.

we had floats and it was cool. anyways, i totally just wanted to leave reminders why camp is so darn fun.

hey evergreeners,

camp is going great - it's busy out here...currently we have 112 campers in Sparky and Explorer camps, 10 out on Roughin' it and 9 out on Trails Away. it's awesome. I just wanted to drop in and say that we're loving life out here.

this next weekend out welcome center gets dedicated and our fundraising events take place (Ride a thon and our golf tournement). pretty exciting times if you ask me. keep praying for us as the camp moves forward.

we've got two weeks of summer left so please pray for the kids coming and the staff that work here. they're starting to think about what their fall looks like and school and whatever else is going on for them so please pray that they will continue to focus and shine Christ to our campers.

hey camp evergreen!

sorry that it's been so long since i've written. camp has starting and time has just been flying. we've all ready had a family camp, trail blazer I camp and we're just finishing our first sparky/explorer camp. it's been a great start to the summer. forgive me if my updates are few and far between this summer as things keep busy here at camp. i will try to do what i can to post some pictures of what's been up here at camp. kids are coming to know Jesus Christ our Lord and their personal savior and learning tons about God. thanks for sticking with me. in the meantime here's a picture of our wrangling team for the summer. happy trails wherever you are!

this song was song almost every day of almost every week in 2001. it was brought to camp evergreen my the program director, colin peters. it was sung and adopted by staff and campers alike. rus klassen and chuck were a couple of the singers who accompanied colin. if you are old enough to remember the teens week parent program of that summer...it was perhaps the FUNNIEST parent program we've ever had. i don't think i recall a song that was so loved by EVERYBODY! so here's to the many people that have bugged me about posting this song.

greetings. gosh i love the sun.

camp is going great and we're buzzing with school groups, volunteers, and staff. we're starting to gear up for camp. outtrips coordinators are planning menus and chapels for trails away and adventure, AIM coordinators are planning CIT and PUSH. jenni, vicky, and i are planning hard for summer and trying to keep up with our work as all of our activities steam ahead.

and for my anonymous commentor....walk and talk is the nickname our staff had given mission impossible. and as far as i know...we're still planning on playing mission impossible.

AIM...CIT

AIM stands for Adventures in Ministry. CIT stands for Counsellors in Training. unfortunately this camp is for our older campers...specifically those going into grade 11 or 12. this 3 week program trains you in leadership, devotional leading, and how to become that camp evergreen counsellor you loved as a kid. you will engage in sessions during the day with your group, have evaluations several times during your stay and grow in your relationship with God. CITs help with some of the maintenance, leading of games, participation in chapel, and even get worked into cabins during the second and third weeks.

i'm that good!

ha! two in one week. i'm doing good...but probably not making up much ground considering that i missed a whole chunk of time in there. well, i am officially working out of my new office. the new building is called the "Welcome Centre". it's our new office building located right at the parking lot. it's got a covered boardwalk so that when you're registering for camps you don't have to stand in the rain and Esther doesn't have to leave her office.

i've got a pretty big office now but it's simply because there's so much traffic through it every day. i'm loving it.

there will be a grand opening in the summer some time so i'll let you know when that date has been decided on. for right now why don't we feature another camp...

TRAILS AWAY...
holy cow...i mean cowboy...this is a crazy awesome camp. i had the privelege to lead it a bunch of years in a row from 1999-2002. basically we truck you and a bunch of horses out west of camp evergreen about 30minutes. we drop you off and you get to ride and ride and ride. pretty much until you don't want to ride anymore. but it's tons of fun. it's a pretty hard camp for first time riders but if you've got a bit of experience and you absolutely love horses like i do then maybe you otta look into getting yourself on trails away.

you get to camp in tents and bareback, and do crazy things with horses out there in god's beautiful gift of creation. it's amazing. so amazing that we've only got space in one camp now.

Trails Away 4 is the only camp that is currently available. it was originally scheduled for grades 9-12 however...we've opened it up to atleast grade 8s. and if there are some grade 7s out there that feel their summer just won't be the same without Trails Away then give us a call and we'll work something out. Trails Away 4 is scheduled for July 30-August 4th

my goodness! i sure have been everywhere but here in the last couple of weeks. i am so sorry for not updating this but hopefully you will understand in a couple of minutes. we got our spring staff last sunday and they're fantastic. we've got brittney (from saskatchewan), jannalee (from manitoba), dusten (calgary), brendan (calgary), omiunu (nigeria), steph (nevada), vicky (coaldale), sugar (from...well...here), luke (lethbridge), sam (turner valley), julia (red deer), bethanna (irricana)...and eric is still coming (calgary). they're awesome and i hopefully will get some pictures up so that you can put some names to faces. it's been a busy week of training and rain....lots and lots of rain that even turned to snow sometimes. and we all know how I feel about snow.

and...drumroll please. ken and rachel had their baby last saturday. they had a beautiful baby boy and named him Daniel Jacob. Awesome! we're so excited for them.

that's my update about camp right now. we start getting spring groups in this week and then it's a short two months until summer. are you ready?

ROUGHIN' IT!

this camp is sweet! sleep in a teepee in a remote campsite at camp evergreen. roughin' it is all about a more relaxed schedule - no meal bells, no schedules, just a camp all to yourself. you get to do all of the activities, catch frogs, build shelters, cook your food over an open fire, play in the creek! These camps fill up fast - a bunch of them are all ready full...here's what we have left:

Roughin' It Jr. Boys 1 (Grades 3-5) - July 9-14th

Roughin' It Jr. Boys 2 (Grades 3-5) - August 7-11th

Roughin' It Intermediate Boys (Grades 6-8) - July 30-August 4th

i took this picture from my office window. it makes me want to cry. are we not supposed to be having RAIN showers? so that we can have may FLOWERS? isn't that how the rhyme goes? ugh!

things...other than the snow - are going great. we're getting busier all the time...thanks to those who came forward and said that they would volunteer this weekend. I really, really appreciate it. we're doing pretty good out here. i can't wait to get into the new building. it should be about a month now until we're in it. That's super exciting. It's getting some of the finishing touches on it and soon - very soon we will be in it.

as far as Ken the Cook goes...yes, he and rachel are pregnant and no they have not had their baby yet. i will keep everyone updated. that should happen within the next two weeks but we expect sooner rather than later.

i was a lazy bum last week and did not update the blog. so i'm two camps behind. So let's get caught up!

IGNITE CAMPS

better known as intermediate camps. yeah - we renamed everything. we thought it would be more fun to be an igniter than an intermediate...did it work? so this camp is for our campers in grades 7-9. 'twill be a fun time for sure!

you get to chose a chosen skill like horsemanship, marksmanship, animation, climbing, mountain biking (without the mountains of course), and many more. you'll get to do that skill for an hour and a bit a day. there's other activity times to try and experience all the other activities (like if you're not a horsey rider person extrodinare but still want to try riding...there's a chance for you to do that) and tons of wide games like jug 'n' jog (of course) and capture the flag...maybe even in the dark.

there's also evening programing AFTER chapel...like Mission Impossible and maybe even a coffee house...who knows - I guess you'll just have to come and find out for yourself! we've got travis padgham and dale friesen coming out to speak.

IMPACT

previously known as Teens. we also so totally stoked for this camp. it's our oldest age of the summer and we don't slow down just because it's the last camp. it's so packed that we don't run ANY other camp at the same time (we need that much help!). all campers should look forward to getting into grade 9-12 because THEY GET TO ATTEND IMPACT! All the stuff above except more extreme, later nights, more evening programming, and a way cool speaker (mike perschon!!). every night after chapel there's evening programming. stuff like MI, Coffee House with real live music, Homemade Jam, a super D duper worship night, and a drive through theatre without the emissions!

prepare to be moved, prepare to be challenged, prepare to make an impact. here's the dates:

new building, new baby, new llama?

just kidding about the llama. we do have one...actually two. sprocket and spigget (as in the thing that a water tape attaches to). here's sprocket (very attractive, i know):

well - the building is getting close to done. i think we're going to be moving in at the end of May. The doors are on, the floors are done, the walls are painted...just lights, window cills, interior furniture (mill work), toilets and sinks (can't forget those!), and last little touches like that. The building looks AWESOME. there's been a guy working hard for the last month or so putting the outside trim on the building - makin' it look pretty. see for yourself:

new baby - that's right...tasha (one of our mares) has had a baby! our first 2007 foal!! she's so cute. jon and julia have yet to name her but i'm sure it will be a good one. i'll keep you up to date on the naming of the foal in the next couple of days. that's all for now...let's hope that it just keeps on melting!!

thanks for the comments. i always love hearing from campers and staff...heh heh ojo! this week has been very hard for me because of the snow. it doesn't even feel like it's the beginning of april. it actually feels like it's the beginning of march. this is the kind of weather that i normally get on my birthday. boourhns.

but hopefully, with the weather getting nicer this coming weekend all the snow will disappear and spring will arrive. isn't the rhyme supposed to go april showers bring may flowers? last time i checked april snowfall does not produce pretty flowers. * sniff sniff *

since i will be gone until next wednesday i am going to feature another camp this week. so hear comes trail blazers:

Trail Blazers

this camp is new this year. it's for grades 5 and 6. this week will be a little bit of a taste of our ignite camps. campers will get an opportunity to chose two special skills in the week. skills like mountain biking, horsemanship, marksmanship (arrows, air rifelry, sling shots), canoeing, crafts, climbing, etc...in addition to spending a little extra time doing your chosen skills you'll have a chance to enjoy other activities like the climbing wall, high ropes, low ropes, canoeing, jewellry making, archery, and so much more. we've got some awesome speakers lined up and totally fun times. you'll get to stay up a bit later than you did when you were an explorer...you might even get to go on secret cabin excursions.

but i don't want to give up too much information. here are the dates:

Sparky & Explorer Camps

hey hey hey!

here's our first featured camp update. i'm gonna start with the little kids cuz they're so cute.

SPARKY CAMP
sparky camps are for our youngest campers (grades 1-3) and they always start on a wednesday and go to saturday. you get to spend 3 nights and 4 days making new friends, playing games (like capture the flag, counsellor hunt, and jug 'n' jog), singing songs (YODEL 'n' HUM), and doing activities. activities range from the climbing wall, pony rides, wagon rides, archery, high ropes, canoeing, crafts...and so much more. we have super cool speakers and lots of music.

EXPLORER CAMP
this camp is the next step up from sparky. grades 3-5 own the land! the week either starts on a monday or tuesday (depends which month you come in). have a chance to conquer the wall, scale our high ropes, ride a bucking bronco (just kidding - our horses don't know how to buck), and games...oh the games! capture the flag, jug 'n 'jog (cuz it just wouldn't be camp without j 'n' j), bucket ball, knights - riders - princesses, and more!

Explorer 1 - July 16-21
Explorer 2 - August 7-11

spring is here!! (almost)

greetings. c-bear reporting.

the snow is melting and everything is getting muddy out here. unfortunately it's just part of the story. i don't think that we could have spring without mud out here. it's supposed to be something beautiful like 14 degrees today and 15 tomorrow. awesome. but i hear that we're in for a bit of cooler weather and more snow. but it always happens. we're just about in april and that means the trees will start budding and the mud will start drying and SPRING will be right on it's way to ... way for it ... SUMMER!

over the next few weeks, i'll be updating this twice a week. once will be to feature a camp and the other will just to say hello. i'll have some updated pictures of the building next week - i just don't have my camera with me right now.

ah man! summer. hundreds of excited screaming kids and camps...lots of camps - and camp staff! hey, i'd love to hear about what your favorite part of camp is! i'm starting to play programs and set up the schedules so i'd love to take some suggestions.

here comes summer!
