Every Moment Counts

“But whatever you do, find the God-centered, Christ-exalting, Bible-saturated passion of your life, and find your way to say it and live for it and die for it. And you will make a difference that lasts. You will not waste your life.” - John Piper As a child, my parents never sent me to summer camp. In grade 9, I went on a school trip to Frontier Lodge, we called it The Winter Survival Trip . These few days at camp sparked a desire in me to go back that summer. However, thinking back now, it was more than the fun activities we did that made me want to go back, it was the staff. I saved every penny that I could to go for summer camp. That one week at camp impacted me in ways that I never realized until this past year. Camp was full of adventure that included rock climbing, rappelling, mountain biking, white-water rafting, and overnight camp in the mountains. Regardless of my love for each activity, the highlight of camp by far was the staff, especially my cabin leader. She was

Where to eat?

It’s a question that has plagued mankind for centuries, do I stay in and make myself Kraft dinner or do I go out and spend my hard earned money at McDonalds?  That is a question that I have not needed to ask myself for the past two years, due to the fact that here at Camp Evergreen we have the honour of having Ken as a chef.  If you have ever been to camp you know what I mean.  Ken's commitment to good food has always meant that the food is above and beyond that of a normal meal.  Some of these meals would include, but are not limited to: burgers fresh off the barbecue with all the trimmings, pancakes with strawberry sauce and whipped cream, chili with corn bread muffins, juicy chicken breast, fresh veggies, pizza, bacon (of course), and so so so many more.  And if you have one of those special diets don't worry about it, as long as Ken knows he will prepare something just as amazing for you.  Ken is like that. He wants everyone to feel they are getting the best food possib

A Life Transformed

It's a strange thing to walk out of your house at 7:45am on March 9th to find puddles already formed and eavestroughs dripping. It's strange to watch the horses start shedding or rhubarb trying to grow. My brain is still trying to convince me that it's winter and yet everything around me screams that spring is here. Do you know what spring means? It means that summer camp is just, JUST around the corner. Ever since I was a young'un - I loved camp. Loved, in my case, might be a slight understatement. While my brother experienced a wee bit of homesickness - I was the kid who was hauling their bags out of mum's car, insisting that I could register myself. One year I even told mum that the camp ended a day later than it actually did. The camp directors figured that one out pretty easily though. The day that camp ended I was counting down the days until I got to go again; 357 days...356 days...355 days...354 days... I loved the food, the silly dress up nights, night

Soup Buns Camp and Gem

Five in the morning comes very early no matter how you slice it.  (the only exception would be a trip to Disneyland).  Sunday morning Camp Evergreen was on its way to Gem for our first ever soup and buns lunch.  Daniel, Bev, Ken and I (Ranger) packed up the van and were on the road by 6:18!  It was dark and a little blustery but Ken already had about three cups of coffee so there was no need to turn on the radio as we listened to his plethora of songs! After missing the 16th Ave exit off Stoney Trail and taking a quick tour of Chestermere, we headed east on the Trans Canada Highway.  First stop - Strathmore for breakfast at McDonalds.  Daniel and I were tempted to start drinking coffee because it was free.  That could of been a disaster.  Ken wasn't sure about his McGriddle and Bev needed a bit more water in her oatmeal.  But we needed to push on, so we took our orders to go and jumped back into the van.  (I should mention that I drove very gently as we didn't want the b
